Geneion Study using Affymetrix Rat Genome 230 2.0 GeneChip®

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) has been widely used in many industrial applications. PFOA is also found in animal tissues, including the blood of humans. Due to the strong C-F bonds in PFOA, it does not appear to undergo further biodegradation, and its biological roles remain unclear. Recent study from Dr. Paul Lam (Dept. of Biology & Chemistry, City University of Hong Kong) reported the use of Affymetrix GeneChip to identify alternations in gene regulation in rats with PFOA treatment. Alternation in expression of over 500 genes were reported. This information can then be used to determine which signal transduction pathways are affected. For details, see Guruge KS et al. Toxicological Sciences 89(1), 93-107 (2006).
